On the Red-tailed Hawk nest, last year’s breeding pair returned to the same nest and have again produced three young; young hawks, just about ready to leave the nest, are called “eyas (singular) or “eyasses” (plural).

Eight new bird species for my life list, photographed on a trip to Sierra Valley Preserve (Feather River Land Trust), May 11, 2024, along with some other bird species.

New species #4 and #5 for 2024; Virginia Rail and Red-necked Phalarope, and other spring species. The video for the Virginia Rail records its call only; the bird does not show. It is a very shy and elusive bird and is seldom seen but often heard.

March and early April have brought three new bird species for me, along with some very notable uncommon visitors. New species: Cackling Goose, Eared Grebe, Red Crossbill. Visitors: Western Kingbird, Cinnamon Teal, Hooded Merganser, Greater Yellowlegs, White-faced Ibis.
